New copy-proof DVDs on the way?

Content-protection company Macrovision is expected to release a new DVD copy-protection technology Tuesday in hopes of substantially broadening its role in Hollywood's antipiracy effort.

The company is pointing to the failure of the copy-proofing on today's DVDs, which was broken in 1999. Courts have ordered that DVD-copying tools be taken off the market, but variations of the software remain widely available online.

Macrovision's new "RipGuard DVD" technology can prevent much of the copying now being done with those tools and can help bolster studios' DVD sales even if it's not perfect, company executives say.

"Encryption standards either work or they don't," said Adam Gervin, Macrovision's senior director of marketing, "Now the cat's out of the bag. (DVD sales) are going to be one of the main sources of revenue for Hollywood for a long time, so why leave billions of dollars on the table when you can do something about it?"

who pays $30 for a dvd? most new releases are $14.99 to $17.99 upon initial release. they usually go up a couple of $ after the 1st few days then go back down a few months later.
they are actually cheaper than vhs on an average.
now when they 1st came out years ago $30 was not uncommon. i have several of those high priced dvds myself. unfortunately.

Matters little to me. I'm not into copying DVD's.

But they BETTER work when I stick them in my DVD player.

Very true indeed, no matter how much they will try, someone or something will always break it, it's a challenge right???

Basic problem - any protection "improvement" must remain compatible with the installed user base of DVD Player hardware, even if they don't care about upsetting those who play things in a computer, like the problems with protected audio CDs.

The more they break the original standards, the more likely they are to hit player compatibility problems, but then if you can't play it, that's as protected as you can get!

In my view, I believe that Slysoft will be the first to crack this new copy protection with anydvd. They were able to crack the ArCCOS that sony has released and updates that database as soon as a new disc is released. It will only be a matter of time once a disc is released with the new protection. I love anydvd.

so far the only problem ive had with any recent DVD's was Resident Evil Apocolypse. the thing worked in all my dvd players except for my dvd-rom.

i "purchased" the newest version of PowerDVD 6 CLJ delux and it worked just fine after that.

I wouldn't be so sure, neither the DVD-Audio or SACD formats have been cracked yet, and they've been out for years now.

Something has to be worth spending the effort to crack , as these formats you mention above are not really in general use there is no point.

Not a problem if you know enough about electronics; I have a modified Pioneer that plays both formats (BA-HA)!!!. The reasons why these haven't been cracked is because of the licensing issues not because they're infallible.

Thousands of them are sold, many more SACDs compared to DVD-Audio, but mostly to audiophiles who run them on their own systems, not on computers.

Not a computer drive. There are no computer drives that can play SACDs. I know that they could be cracked, but the fact remains that they havn't, and to anyone woh expects every new copy-protection format to quickly be broken will be disappointed.

Like it was said earlier there still has to be some level of compatability /w current DVD's. However, with the new higher def. dvd's coming soon, currently our DVD-Rom's will not play them anyway. One can only hope we'll be able to hack the firmware for the new roms.

There are people in this world who's entire commitment to living another day consists exclusively of seeing to it that as much piracy as possible takes place.. on sheer principle... right or wrong. Someone will defeat something this big even if it takes a little while.
