Microsoft To Ditch Passwords for Longhorn

Microsoft has revealed at a security panel at CeBIT that it is preparing to dump passwords in favor of two-factor authentication in forthcoming versions of Windows.
Detlef Eckert, the senior director in charge of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing initiative, did not specify which form of two-factor authentication would be used in the next edition of the company's operating system, codenamed Longhorn.

But he said that the code would have vastly improved handling of technologies including smartcards and security tokens.

vailr is on a distinguished road

Could that be why MS recently introduced a mouse with a built-in thumb print scanner?

I can see this one taking a long time for corporations to adopt. I am betting that there will be a way to enable passwords. Some corporations are not willing to pay the money to buy the system to make the ID picture and program the smart cards and then pay for the additional hardware/software needed for the computers to work with it. For this to work the corporation will also need additional servers to function as Certificate Authorities (CA) and they will also need a secondary security device (thumbprint scanner). The corporation could also hire a company to provide the CA. With IT budgets getting smaller all the time I can't see this happening.
