Nvidia first — and perhaps only — user of DDR II until 2004

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Nvidia Corp. will become the first mainstream user of DDR II memory when it announces its NV30 PC graphics processor at Comdex Monday (Nov. 18). However, Intel Corp. is not expected to support the memory type for broader use in PC main memory until 2004.

"There's kind of a gap. That's why we are coming out with 400-MHz DDR-I," said Tom Quinn, vice president of marketing for Samsung Semiconductor Inc., which has DDR II parts available today.

Samsung believes the fast DDR-I parts will fill a hole between 333-MHz DDR-I that is moving into mainstream desktop PCs today and the expected shift to DDR-II.

Didnt ATI show a DDR-II R9700 on Techtv not to long ago?

From what I know about the whole ATI and DDR II saga is that it was DDR-II memory configured as DDR-I speeds. Therefore it wasn't optimized as DDR-II.

Wouldn't that sort of be like a computer manufacturer building a PC and bragging about how they're running PC150 in it, but only running the FSB on the system at 100Mhz 'cause that's all the CPU could handle? Or am I way off base in my comparison?

They ran DDRII on a chipset optimized for the bus of DDRI, DDRII is not compatible in memory management and write/read cycles, so the DDRII basically was glorified DDRI that was really expensive...and a marketing ploy.

A simple "yes" would have sufficed.

Now that we've heard from our "special" hardware reviewer "experts", I think we can safely put this matter behind us.

I used to feel the same way you did back when I had my rage128 and also my radeon 7200, but when I picked up a GOOD GF2 MX400 it was all over.

There are a lot of different manufacturers of nVidia cards, and a lot of them do just shove crap out the door...but if you get yourself a good one you will understand the difference.

I'm not trying to convert you or tell you you're wrong, I really feel that's a choice only the individual can make, but try and keep an open mind and don't be blindly loyal by brand either way....judge it on a card by card basis. You'll benefit from it greatly.

ok!!! i keep open mind for that...it\s better if nvidia will make their cards in their factories...ok I don\t trust them...

No, actually its not. Then they would be just like ATI - having to spread all thier efforts across thier company to develop, make, and produce the chip and card. By only developing the chip, they can put the extra funds towards R&D and leave the manufacturing to other companies. Its a win win situation for nVidia as long as there will be companies who'll want to user their chips
