ATI R520 "Fudo" has 24 plus pipelines

If we are talking about more than 300 million transistors in the chip that is 17 square mm small, we believe that we are talking about one of the biggest semiconductor chip for a computer ever built and it will be used for games. We still cannot predict the exact number of pipelines of R520 chip. ATI placed 32 pipelines inside, but there is a chance that it will enable just 24 for a start. It will be a pure marketing decision but technically every R520 "Fudo" will have full 32 pipes. ATI can just keep these extra eight pipes for the later chip and enable them if necessary. If ATI's czars decide that they need more performance they will go with full 32 pipes.

no different then the jump from 4 to 8 or 8 to 16......

it usually works like that..... IMO, rumor it may be.... but it's still plausable... and the idea has been brought up serveral times relating to chip sizes many times. Usually they've always said going larger would be for Cache size requirements though.... but a chip to big may be more difficult to cool... Someone might need a Airaition Fan (30,000CFM)

It is possible but dont foget you will need alot of the extra die size for full 32bit registers through the entire pipe, not just parts of it as it is now. This will take a fair amount of real estate, then there is the small matter of sm3.0 compiance and that took a substancial increase on the nvidia core to incorporate. ATi may be able to do it in less but it will be a very tightly packed chip with 24 pipes letalone 32. But again it is possible and good news for all of us if it is

Still why do people read the inquirer? It prints so many stories on the same subject that one of them will be at least half right.

The 2.0b chips ar eclose to 3.0 compliant already, its onlu a few minor features and specification differences which seperate it from being 3.0. Please remember tho, Longhorn lvl gfx hardware is due for a major redesign, intergrated pixil and vertex system vs seperate and best of all, Virtual Memory support which will add on even more stuff. That and ATI prefers more tried and tested processes for a chip. Its all good (I hope)

Now I'm curious about the memory interface. If it's only 256Bit, ATi will have to use very fast RAM to give the monster GPU enough food ... 512Bit would be nice.

Greetings from Germany,
