"Unlike standards such as PCI-E and AGP, PATA and SATA have been able to coexist in a very conservative manner - motherboards now days won't force you to go with one or the other, you can choose - heck, you can even mix between the two. The reason for this is SATA has still yet to really distance itself from PATA and its incredibly aged IDE setup - it doesn't have the speed increase touted before release and for some people, the more efficient cabling system is all but efficient when involving potential loose and flimsy connections thanks to the rather poorly designed standard SATA connections."
