VIA announces chipset support for AMD dual-core technology

"VIA Technologies today announced support for the latest dual-core AMD Opteron processors with its K8 series of core-logic chipsets. The VIA K8 series chipsets, including the new VIA K8T890, uses VIA Hyper8 technology for high speed and low latency performance with the latest AMD Opteron processors with dual-core architectures.

The VIA K8T890 also integrates 20 lanes of PCI Express connectivity, enabling high bandwidth peripheral connections and support for the latest professional-class 3D graphics solutions for workstation applications."

I still wonder how do they deliver SLI support (two PCIe x16 slots) with chipsets that only support 20 PCIe lanes...

It works by turning both PCIe 16x slots into PCIe 8x slots when two videocards are installed. Which at this point really doesn't matter that much because the videocards don't need that much bandwidth yet.

That's what I figured, but with no documentation to back it up...
Anyway, if this is the case, I think many people wouldn't jump on SLI so gladly if they knew about it. Not that it matters anyway.

System Specs

20 pci-e lanes on a motherboard is usually 2 x8 slots (one can be used as x16 when there's only 1 video card) and like 1 x4 slot .... or 1 x2 and 2 x1 slots etc..... all sorts of combinations
but yeah SLI is x8 times 2 ...
