Earlier this month, Intel introduced their first dual core desktop CPUs - the Pentium D and the Pentium Extreme Edition. Coupled with extremely aggressive pricing designed to move the majority of the desktop market to dual core within the next two years, Intel's launch did not cease to impress. The ability to bring workstation class performance in multithreaded and multitasking environments to the desktop, at an affordable price, is something that we've been hoping for for years. Intel's launch was pretty interesting, but today, AMD has more bang.

i would love to get an A64 X2 when they come out, but the price just seems so high in comparison to just getting a Venice core now and overclocking it like a *****.
Hmmm, what to do, what to do Venice now - price ~£140 - superior gaming perf. X2 then - price ~ £400 - superior windows "smoothness" hmmmmmm nana |

I'll most likely wait until Amd's second gen of duel cores to come out, pehaps even with a new pin designation. Then scoop up a 4400 the price should be down then and it will also give Windows and Linux time to properly support and take advantage of duel core tech. Also in a years time 64 bit OS's should be mature and have full 3rd party support.
Would be nice to be able to game and still fold at or near full speed. Also would rock to be able to have to instances of folding going on while I'm sleeping/ or at work also at full speed, unless of course duel core does it in half the time for a single instance.

The longest I'd probably wait is for later revisions, and not the next generation. I want to do an upgrade, but I don't want to toss out hardware and shell out a lot of money. The support for DDR is a huge calling for me since I've got some great RAM which I'm not willing to let go.

It's nice to see that their expectedly superior product holds up in practice. Don't loose much sleep over the launch though as mainstream dual core CPU's at a reasonable cost will be something for next year.
