China criticised for Internet detentions

Communist-run China has detained or imprisoned at least 33 people in the last three years for their Internet use, according to Amnesty International
Human rights group Amnesty International has called for the release of at least 30 people it said were being held in China for expressing dissident views or sharing information over the Internet.

"Everyone detained purely for peacefully publishing their views or other information on the Internet or for accessing certain Web sites are prisoners of conscience," the London-based organisation said in a statement on Tuesday. "They should be released immediately and unconditionally."

Amnesty said communist-run China had detained or imprisoned at least 33 people in the last three years for their Internet use. Three of them died in detention, the group said.

One of the longest sentences, 11 years, was handed down in August to former policeman Li Dawei for downloading "anti-revolutionary" materials.

"As the Internet industry continues to expand in China, the government continues to tighten controls on on-line information," Amnesty added.

It accused China of filtering and blocking some foreign Web sites, creating special Internet police, blocking search engines and trying to shut down some Web sites which post information on corruption or articles critical of government.

"Anyone surfing the Internet could potentially be at risk of arbitrary detention and imprisonment," Amnesty said.

The officers really do have problems there. They are arresting Christians, it is forbidden to have female children, now this... wish they'll wake up one day and realize; hey, it's 2003 soon...
