Skype Gets Over 100 Million Downloads

"Popular Internet telephony service provider, Skype Communications, recently reported a milestone for the company when it reached 100 million downloads ever since its launch in 2002.

Skype lets users download the software on Macintosh, Pocket PC, Linux or Windows and talk to others globally via the service.

Skype Communications have decided to launch two new services in honor of their 100 millionth download. These two services are Skypeln and Skype Voicemail, two premium services that will be bundled with four platform packages (Mac, Linux, Pocket PC, Windows) in the next release.

The Skypeln service will offer users personal phone numbers, which users would then be able to use for incoming calls from Skype either via landlines or cell phones without roaming costs. You would be able to purchase up to three phones with area codes in Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States during the beta stage.

Skype Voicemail, however, will let users leave messages to others via the Skype protocol. According to the company, the message length can be as long as 10 minutes per message.

"Skype is setting new standards for modern communications by expanding premium services that extend Skype portability, mobility and ubiquity across a variety of platforms, including the traditional phone network. SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail enhance the basic free Skype and give friends, family and colleagues not connected to the Internet an inexpensive and convenient way to contact members of our global user base," said Niklas Zennstreom, Chief Executive and Co-Founder, Skype Communications.

Skype Communication said three-month SkypeIn subscriptions are available for euro10 (US $13) and 12-month subscriptions are available for euro30 (US $39). Skype Voicemail subscriptions are available for euro5 (US $7) for three months or euro15 (US $19) for 12 months."
