Google Withdraws Google Web Accelerator
"A few days after Google released there new program called Web Accelerator, they already removed the option to download it. Regarding to their website, the download is removed because they reached the maximum number of downloads for this phase of the beta stage. But the specialists say that Google took it down because of the serious series of bugs in the Web Accelerator."

and because it's a pretty lame idea to begin with. "Let's make an accelerator for broadband only"

I was tempted, mainly because I'm on NTLWORLD and their forced "transparent" proxies are so flaky, but with the problems (leakage of passworded pages) glad I didn't.
As for "broadband only" that may be more for testing, to put some load on them. If this is based on caching at google servers, it would be more effective in countering remote bottlenecks that are slower than your connection... dialup acceleration requires stuffing the data into the pipe faster (compression), or sending less of it (image decimation / local caching). |
