The Competitive Incompetence Conspiracy

I was busy working on a few things today and suddenly a question popped into my head. Isn’t it interesting when one hardware manufacturer introduces a certain feature and its competitor says it’s not necessary, yet they catch some heat for not having this feature and suddenly implement it? That’s been happening a lot these days in various IT field it seems. Let me give you two major examples of "back tracking" in the hardware industry, specifically from ATI and Intel with Shader Model 3.0 and 64-bit extensions.

Decent article, although I think one could dismiss this guy as "Master of the Obvious" and be fairly justified in doing so

Nothing interesting in there. And the 'futureproofing' of NVidia cards is plain BS. Just suppose that last generation of card had SM3.0. Would that be futureproofing? Keeping you from upgrading? I think not.

For those with deep pockets it wouldn't matter. But for those with responsability's that depend on there hard earn cash. Yes futureproofing is the way to go, regardless on how insignificant it might seem to others.

i agree. i have 2 macines & can only afford to buy video cards every 2-3 years. so i buy the most 'future proof' i can find. in this case it was the 6800gt, last time it was the g4 4400, which is still performing suprisingly well considering its age.

Good choices, i had to go with the 6600gt. It's suprising how manufacturers talk about new methods of production that will save them money, yet the prices on these cards keep going up. The xbox360 and ps3 come with memory, cpu, controlers, dvd drives (blue ray) network cards and even HD and new gpu tech from ATI and Nvidia. All this For the price of a mid-high end card, which BTW you have to supply everything listed above for it to work.
