Japanese newspaper quotes Sony officials as saying they are aiming for a mid-level price point for the next-generation console.
After the impact of Monday's PlayStation 3 unveiling wore off, gamers began to start asking questions. Besides lingering doubts about whether or not many of the tech demos were actually of in-game footage, the biggest point of debate was the next-generation console's price. Given that the console's Nvidia tech-based RSX "Reality Synthesizer" graphics chip is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards, which retail for around $1,000 by themselves, many suspected the console will cost as least as much as a medium-end gaming PC. However, Sony will have to be competitively priced or risk being undercut by the Microsoft Xbox 360 or Nintendo Revolution. _______________ Read More/Source: GameSpot

Mainichi Daily News is the japanese equivalent of our National Enquirer. Japanese bat boy spotted! This is just poor reporting to use them as a source to be taken without a grain of salt.

I heard somewhere(can't find the article) that the 'vanilla' PS3 was shaping up to be $4-500, while the 'cat's pajamas' version (hard drive, online, multimedia, la la la, bla bla bla) may cost as much as $800-1000

Gonna be a rough ride if they go above 400. People are still looking for a gaming device not a multimedia center in a box. Parents are going to have a hard time justifying 800 dollars towards a media form that is negatively viewed in parents' eyes.

that is way too much for a console. When the XBOX and ps2 first came out, they were both marked at $300 each, and i thought that even that was way too expensive. I cannot justify to spend that much on a console system when i can spend just as much on my system and play games on much higher quality.

I hope it's not higher than $500 USD as MSRP. But even then, if I didn't want to spend thousands of dollars for a new PC that can come close to these console's power, I'd buy it. It can run higher resolutions and has much more power than any PC today for that price. A few of my friends are considering doing that because they just don't want to pay a lot of money for a PC that can run great looking games.
You know what would really twist the knife in PC gaming? If we can hook up mice and keyboards instead of controllers If all FPS games supported that option, that would so rock! I would have my PS3 or X-Box 360 right beside my PC and use a KVM switch to switch between the two~! 1920 x 1080 on a desktop monitor One can only hope that would happen... In the long run though, prices will slide and that's when I'll probably buy one since I'm still going to upgrade my PC. By that time the PC, should be slightly ahead of the these consoles in terms of power.
