Thumbs Down! Microsoft's Xbox 360 Vs. Sony's PlayStation 3

There are three critical performance aspects of a console:
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance.
  • The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell.
  • Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance
  • The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU.
  • Memory System Bandwidth
  • The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3's by five times

This is the most unreliable and biased report I've seen.......I should have known anyway since its published by Microsoft and its obviously touting its out game console.

From what was shown at E3, Microsoft was not impressive at all. In the end, the main thing that matters is the software, and Microsoft really didn't have much to compete with Sony. When the ability design and sell t-shirts online is one of xbox360's most important features, I don't care if it's 100x more powerful than they say, I certainly wouldn't want one.

Why would the PS3 need 3 ethernet ports? I like that the PS3 uses other types of memory. If they let people save games on any of them that would be really good.

From their report the XBOX360 has better performance from PS3 and is the winner ?

With Software what do you mean??
In Software Microsoft is the King with Windows and they have A LOT TO OFFER

If you mean Games
Some of the best PC games are from Xbox and the opposite

They have better and for mature audience games from what Sony offered with PS2 and PS1 and their Manga Japanese kind of games with low detail graphics until now

lol vasot don't know where your xbox mature gamers came from.
ps2 aint just for kids anyway

and i really doubt if pc will one day reach the level of a console now. megahurtz madness is slightly paused, unless intel/amd pull out some major break through in architecture. there won't be much siginificat increase in performance. in the coming years, i don't see how the pc processors can be comparable with a triple core ppc or a cell...(they're different anyway, cisc vs risc, again)

I like that uber-fast bandwidth, but I have yet to see the entire unit in practice. MS didn't show a lot of variety in their demos, so I'm still not grasping the power of their system yet.

Well, I'm talking strictly consoles here. The fact is, the current xbox and soon the xbox360 may have good games, but most of the best ones end up on PC anyway. I mean, one of the better looking games they showed for the 360, Elder Scrolls IV, was actually a video from the PC version.

And yeah, I don't know what ps1 and ps2 you're referring to as not being for mature audiences, unless you're talking about the Gamecube. ps1 and 2 had as many mature titles as xbox, plus a ton of other games that appeal to any kind of audience. And ps2 may not have the best looking games, but it does have a lot more enjoyable games available that don't end up on PC.

I don't know, the way I see it, if the xbox360 can't be modded into a PC like the current xbox can, then it probably won't do as well.

ExtremeTech Interview with Todd Holmdahl on Xbox 360

You guys need to read this interview that ExtremeTech had with Todd Holmdahl who is responsible for the Xbox hardware development.. among other things Xbox related. Anyways, give the interview they did a read HERE. Interesting stuff. Of interest to me is this exerpt:

"ET: What sort of connections can we expect to our TVs, out of the box? The original Xbox comes with just composite video, and you have to go buy another pack if you want S-video, or another pack if you want component. TH: With the Xbox 360 you'll be able to connect to composite or component out of the box. There will be other things that we support like VGA.

ET: So you will support VGA this time around?

TH: Yeah. We'll also support some of the SCART type adaptors in Europe. It will support S-video, but not out of the box.

ET: What about DVI or HDMI? Those are popular connections on HDTVs these days.

TH: We believe that we have the right set of outputs right now to meet the requirements of people who have HDTV sets today. We're continuing to look at what's going on in the future, and as things change, we've developed a very flexible system, so we can adapt to the different demands that are out there."

WOOT!! Component cables outta the box, and VGA support! Too cool.. especially since my Viewsonic LCD supports 480p/720p. Gonna look so sweet on this puppy.

I think the PS3 will also have VGA support and component cables out of the box but I'm not 100% sure. But I know that it'll support 1080p(1080i with progressive scan) which the Xbox 360 doesn't support.

Well from what I saw of the videos. None of them were made on the upcoming systems. They were rendered on the Xbox and PS2.

Their prices are insane this time around. Nothing really new. Same old games with somewhat better graphics. I will sit this one out.

But there's a lot of console games you can't play on PC's. To give the most obvious examples, you can't play games like Mario, Zelda, or Metroid on PC. Now these are just examples, before someone responds with "Nintendo sux, PC roxxors!!"

If consoles and PC had exactly the same games from every company then I'd agree, PC's are the best. But you'd miss out on a lot of awesome games if you dismiss the consoles just because a PC is more powerful.

Not sure either. I know it does support 1080 since it has the HDMI connectors on the back. Either way, I've got major wood for both of them. However, Sony needs to seriously redesign the PS3, cuz it just looks like something from a PS2/PS1 prototype design. I won't even mention the Microsoft Sidewinder inspired controller. That has to go before anything else.
