PlayStation 3 to launch without bundled hard disk ?

Sony Computer Entertainment's chief technology officer Masayuki Chatani has cast doubt on the company's plans to include a hard disk unit in the PlayStation 3's launch package next spring.

Speaking in the pages of Japanese magazine Famitsu, Chatani said that a strategy had "yet to be decided", but added that he felt people would want to upgrade to higher capacity drives - the implication being that Sony would shy away from making the hard disk unit an obligatory part of the PlayStation 3 launch package.

I bet they keep the price the same but without a hard drive, so we the customer can pick up that tab at a later date.

if the hard drive has serious functionality like being able to ACTUALLY save games from any game and loads of media besides playing FF11 and modding, then maybe....

but they should include one standard, sick of sony ripping us off on network adapters and memory cards

they might still release it with a drive but maybe something like a really small one. Or have it as an optional companet so you can buy it with or with out

Well it could be helpful in one way. If you think about it why would you want to HD in the unit. You probably only get a 30day warrenty anyways(like the PS2). For them it is probably a way to make sure more units work when you buy them so they get less returns because of falty hardware. And if they let us use standard desktop drives then hey most of us(on this board) probably have some laying around somewhere. Either way we will see.
