Sony ships 90 millionth PS2

Electronics giant's console on track to beat predecessor; 16.17 million new slim line units sent to market.

TOKYO--Sony Computer Entertainment announced today that total worldwide shipment of PlayStation 2 consoles has reached 90 million cumulative units as of June 2. Divided into territories, the company shipped 21.04 million units in Japan and Asia (launch date: March 4, 2000), 36.48 million units in North America (launch date: October 26, 2000), and 32.48 million units in Europe and PAL regions (launch date: November 24, 2000).

SCE comments that the shipment of 90 million PS2 units since launch comes more than two years and three months earlier than it did for the original PlayStation, released in 1995. The company disclosed that it shipped an impressive 16.17 million of its new slim line PS2 between November 1 to March 31. At the current rate, the PS2 should have no trouble surpassing the original PlayStation's record of more than 100 million units shipped worldwide.

SCE says that more than 5,000 titles are currently available for the backward-compatible PlayStation 2, with cumulative game shipments reaching over 800 million units. 252 million units were shipped in the last business year alone.

Amazing. 16.17 million new slim lines.. I didn't think it would do that well.
