Intel Develops New Wireless Network Chip

Intel Corp., the world's largest chip maker, said it has developed prototype chip technology that can handle all popular forms of wireless networking, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

In a technical paper to be released today, Intel said it created circuitry that communicates using three existing varieties of Wi-Fi technology, as well as forthcoming technology called 802. 11n that could raise transmission speeds to more than 100 megabits per second from 54 mps. The prototype, created using standard manufacturing technology known as CMOS, stacks a communications chip with other circuitry, creating a "system-in-a-package," according to the Wall Street Journal.

Krishnamurthy Soumyanath, director of Intel's communications circuits research lab, said such technology could one day help send multiple streams of high-quality video around the home at the same time. But he said he did not know when the technology might be incorporated into commercial products that Intel would sell.
