Jack Kilby, Father of the Integrated Circuit, Dead at 81

Jack Kilby, the man who invented the integrated circuit and helped make the microprocessor possible has died at the age of 81. The cause of death was cancer. Kilby died at his Dallas home. He worked for Texas Instruments for many years.

Kilby built the first integrated circuit into a single piece of semi conducting material half the size of a paper clip during his first year at Texas Instruments. By 1962, TI had the first major contract for integrated circuits, working on the Minuteman Missile for the Pentagon.

Actually met the man a few years ago. I had a prof. that was good friends with him and actually worked a TI with him. Very nice guy and he was scary smart.

An evolutionary has passed, it is sad, but his contribution to the world of electronics will be forever here. Now why is it i only hear this on the net, why on earth wouldn't the news teams in australia cover this. Honestly, it may not seem significant to some, but this man is obviously and was, a very very important part of our society.
