Intel CEO fires back at AMD suit

Intel CEO Paul Otellini on Wednesday defended his company against new legal attacks from Advanced Micro Devices.

AMD filed a lawsuit against Intel Monday in U.S. District Court in Delaware. The rival chipmaker claims that Intel is using monopolistic business practices, such as threatening retaliation against customers who do business with AMD. AMD is asking the court to impose punitive damages.

The man who recently replaced Craig Barrett as Intel's CEO said his company has been involved in other antitrust suits, has faced similar issues before and expects to come out on top of this one as well.

"Intel has always respected the laws of the countries in which we operate," Otellini said in a statement. "We compete aggressively and fairly to deliver the best value to consumers. This will not change."

AMD will loose. Not because I favor Intel and can sling more mud, but because Intel has more $$$ to pay lawyers and is not in any wrong.

that is my opinion to. but we wont really know until we are further into the suit. jus tthe fact that amd is having to go on this 'fishing expedition' among all these other companies tells you that they do not have anything substantial themselves.

Well... I believe AMD, Why else would Dell have a news story that talks about looking at AMD and then all of the sudden you see another story the next day that's like;kk just kidding we will put our efforts into producing Intel only platforms.

I bet that there are some shady things going on in the background. It will really get interesting when they start asking for these email's and they, all of the sudden, can't seem to locate the archived messages...

Well, until the murky details come out, Im not getting off the fence just yet, just a word of warning to the people wishing to hang Intel, AMD dont look like a company that stands up for others rights, and I think this is a purely self serving exersise, but time will tell.

That doesn't make any sense unless your talking about AMDs processors, which have Intel beat.

The "fishing expedition" is where AMD is trying to get email evidence from the companies that have supposedly been forced to use Intel's products. They are looking for instances where Intel either charges more or decides not to pay an agreed amount of money for rebates and future development because the company (e.g. dell, hp) wanted to support AMD.

I think that if you read the quote in that perspective it makes perfect sense.

I found a quote from the Trade Commission in Japan:

Quote:
The suit in the Tokyo High Court seeks US$50 million (approx. 5.5 billion yen) in damages, following on the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC)’s findings in its March 8, 2005 Recommendation that Intel K.K. committed violations of the Antimonopoly Act. The JFTC Recommendation concluded that Intel K.K. interfered with AMD Japan’s business activities by providing large amounts of funds to five Japanese PC manufacturers (NEC, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Sony, and Hitachi) on the condition that they refuse to purchase AMD processors. As a result of these illegal acts, AMD Japan suffered serious damages, losing all of its sales to Toshiba, Sony, and Hitachi, while sales to NEC and Fujitsu also fell precipitously. The suit in the Tokyo High Court follows Intel K.K.’s acceptance of the JFTC Recommendation. In accepting the Recommendation, Intel K.K. did not dispute the JFTC findings.

With that stated. It seems only natural that AMD would want to have a lawsuit in the US over the same thing. They won, or will win, in Japan so AMD figures they have a pretty good shot at making some more $ for anti-competitive behavior in the US as well.

Yeah AMD wants a market where it can sell its processors productively and stimulate more growth. When you see machines running on pentium Ds instead of Athlon X2s, something's wrong.

must be a conspiracy. not people making a decision based on a platform, not just a cpu. & dont even bring in the common consumer who does not know much of anything. i will freely grant you that. most computers are purchased by business's. by people who have at least some knowledge to a whole lot of know how.
people, they are not just buying a cpu, they are buying a platform. i just do not understand why people do not get this.
