Crossfire Interview with Rene Froeleke

As most of you know, I work for a computer magazine in Greece. I was writing a preview of ATI's Crossfire, and Rene Froeleke (who is Technical Manager for ATI Europe, Middle East and Africa) was kind enough to answer a few questions concerning this exciting ATI tech. This mini-interview (together with the Crossfire preview) will be featured in the upcoming issue of Computer for all here in Greece:

1. Many months have passed since the introduction of SLI from nVidia. Why was Crossfire launched now and not earlier?

ATI: Because our aim for CrossFire was to offer a more complete and hassle-free solution. We wanted to ensure that customers can use their existing boards, no matter what board or BIOS revision, and use it with CrossFire. And one of our main focus points was to offer a performance or quality improvement for any game out there, not just games that we decide would be important.

2. What is your opinion the main reason that someone should jump into the Crossfire platform? What are its main advantages?

ATI: The main reasons for CrossFire are flexibility and compatibility. Different boards can be used and CrossFire works with all 3D games out there. And, if the performance in a game is already good enough, then Super AA is a feature that uses the graphics power to increase the picture quality. For the chipset side of things, we have taken our proven Xpress 200 technology and designed enthusiast mainboards together with our partners, giving enthusiast users what they want, overclockability, tweakability and a very rich feature set.

Should be interesting, SLI really had ATi on the back foot, hopefully Crossfire will even the odds and get development of both companies graphics cards on at even greater pace
