Sony Losing Battle with PSP Hackers

Hackers have successfully cracked the copyright protection used on PlayStation Portable discs and the games have begun to appear on Internet sites and file-sharing networks. This is the second time hackers have cracked the PSP's protection; it was first cracked shortly after its release in Japan last year.

To run the games, all the downloader must do is save them to a Sony Memory Stick. The crack only works with version 1.5 of the PSP operating system. New games will require 1.51 in an attempt to thwart copiers, so users will be forced to upgrade if they want to play the newer games.

Ya see! I'm not full of $#!^!

BTW: Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition is the first game to do this. It will ask you if you want to upgrade your PSP to version 1.51, but it won't force you to. Thanks to all this cracking crap you can be sure that the above statement will start to come true real damn soon.

Sooner than that. The Sony rep mentioned that the Euro release of the PSP will see a new firmware version, and we might see one before then even.

However, if THIS is any indication then all this crap is moot (btw, this is not a modchip as it states in the heading). If true (and from what I've been hearing around the net where TeamX hangs out a lot, it is) the dev kit these guys have made makes it is possible to patch the kernal to boot anything you want without the loaders, downgrade firmware, and slew of other things, but they won't be releasing it to the public (for now). Right now they are currently working on a converter so that you can use any type of flash memory card in the PSP as well as an external USB hard drive.

Personally, I would love to get my hands on one. I'm not willing to spend the same amount of money on a memory stick that has sufficient space for mp3/movies as I did to buy my PSP. Memory sticks cost too damn much, so anything that will free me from these things I want badly.
