Toshiba Taiwan has confirmed that Toshiba plans to outsource 60% of its notebook production to Taiwan manufacturers this year, up from 40% in 2004. Currently, Compal Electronics, Inventec and Quanta Computer produce notebooks for Toshiba in Taiwan.
With Toshiba expected to ship 6.5-7 million notebooks in 2005, over four million will be outsourced to Taiwan. The vendor shipped 5.827 million notebooks last year, according to International Data Corporation (IDC).
Compal should grab about 70% of the orders that Toshiba gives to Taiwan this year, with shipments of more than 2.5 million units, according to a report in yesterday’s Chinese-language Commercial Times. The paper indicated that Toshiba’s 14-inch wide-screen Satellite M50 model, which hit the Taiwan market on July 6, is manufactured by Compal.
