Imperator development put on indefinite hold
After more than three years of development, Mythic Entertainment's sci-fi-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Imperator, has been put on the shelf.
"This was the most difficult decision that we have ever had to make," said Mark Jacobs, CEO and president of Mythic Entertainment, in a statement. "However, our tremendous success with Dark Age of Camelot set the standard for Mythic releasing nothing less than triple-A games, and Imperator was simply not meeting that standard." While Imperator has not been canceled outright, the company line on the project sounds less than optimistic. "Mythic will perform an internal reassessment of the game's features and make a decision on how to proceed with development in the future." __________ Read More / Source: GameSpot |

Don't know what to make of this.
Imperator has been in development for a long time - since mid 2002 I believe. From everything I read, it was pretty far along at E3, and it got mostly positive press. Dark Age of Camelot, a game a truly adore, has gone downhill considerably ever since the 'Trials of Atlantis' expansion, so have the server populations, which are visible for all to see on their homepage. (Granted, the launch of a new 'classic' ruleset server have seen these go up, and not surprising - the Trials of Atlantis expansion is disabled on them). Mythic isn't making the money it used to here. Something must have gone seriously wrong, recently, in the development. The only other "major" game this far along that was cancelled was Dragon Empires. (Not counting that one indie-mmorpg that went into open beta and was cancelled three days later). It's sad, as the concept behind the game was very fresh, and some of the things they had planned interesting. Hopefully some of those ideas can be transferred over to DAoC.

the game looks good, I wonder what the problem was. Never heard of this before, too bad... back to guild wars.
