Intel seeks to revive clone NB market

Intel is seeking to revise a program promoting tighter cooperation between makers and distributors in an attempt to revive the clone notebook market, channel sources said.

With support from Taiwan’s notebook ODMs, Intel launched a Mobile Value-Added Distributor (MVAD) program in January last year trying to boost the clone notebook market.

However, demand for clone notebooks has not picked up, with the segment seeing its lowest market share in two years at 19.6% in the first quarter of 2005, the sources said. The world’s top 10 notebook vendors had about 80% of the market in 2003 and 2004, and their share is growing still.

The US chip giant is now discussing with vendors and ODMs how they can all improve the MVAD program, the sources said.

Under the MVAD program, distributors have been encouraged to buy barebone systems from the makers and complete the final stages of assembly before selling fully-configured notebooks to customers.

Intel and the clone vendors hope that the trend towards modulization and standardization will turn the present brand-oriented notebook market into a channel-oriented one, the sources said.
