100 mbps as early as next year
Broadband Internet access via TV cables could reach 100 megabits per second as early as next year--50 times faster than the average broadband speeds now offered to cable TV homes, a Finnish company said Wednesday.
Similar data transmission speeds are possible over fiber networks, but these cost much more for the operators to build. "This is a cost-efficient technology, as we use the cable TV networks which are already in place," Jukka Rinnevaara, chief executive of small-cap Finnish broadband equipment maker Teleste, told Reuters. _____________________ Read More/Source: CNet |

"Based on our research, 30 megabits per second is the absolute minimum in future homes,"

Comcast is upgrading their basic package to 6mbps down soon. I think the upload is going to 768kbps.

I just switched to Verizon's Fiber Optic cable (FIOS). I am getting 5 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up (I chose not to get the 15 down / 2 up). You do not share bandwith with others in your neighborhood like you do with cable, and its 34.95 USD per month instead of 43.95 per month for cable( which offers 4 down / 300 kbps up in my area)....
All I can say is What an Improvement !!!!!!! MY son is constantly downloading and uploading stuff from his computer, and since I upgraded, my slowdowns have disappeared (he was eating up my bandwith). I'm convinced cable is loosing out because of their miniscule upload speeds, shared bandwith issue, higher prices, and crappy service (several months ago I called to find out why my download speeds had dropped by over 1 Mb/sec and the guy kept repeating "we don't gaurantee download speeds". When I followed up with a question asking if my settings in my computer could have changed, or if I should try rebooting the modem, or if the extra houses in the neighborhood could have reduced my bandwith, he wouldnt offer any help and just repeated....."we dont gaurantee download speeds".....what a jerk.

![]() Anyway, even with ADSL2, the UK wont reach 100mbs for a good long time, Id be happy with 10 for a decent price, paying £38 a month ($60) for 3Meg when other countries get closer to 10meg or more for less is deeply annoying.

FIOS: yum
. I envy you, highkick. Right now I am in the move process, but hoping to get quality DSL service. Comcast is getting worse by the day, by forcing you to get their TV service, otherwise jacking up the HSI price. Cable is not the future, unless they drastically change their service offerings. And tech support is a joke, unless you escalate the issue beyond all means.

And then cable will have absolutely owned T1/T3...and telecom companies will fight back with massive gigabit fiber optic networks.....w00t
