Track your kids via mobile phone

A SERVICE which enables parents to track their children via their mobile phones is launched in the UK this week.

Called KidsOK, it sends text directions to the parent's phone along with a small map of their offspring's whereabouts.

The service pinpoints the child's location to within 500 metres (547 yards) in urban areas, rising to five kilometres (3.1 miles) in the most rural areas.

Parents can track or "ping" their child's mobile by sending a text message to KidsOK containing the child's name, for example "Ping Steven".

The child's mobile is then traced by one of the four main mobile phone network operators via the nearest transmitter.

Once the child's phone has been located, a text description of their whereabouts is sent to the parent's phone within 60 seconds. This is accompanied by a map, if the parent has a phone capable of picture messaging.

The service allows parents to keep tabs on their children without having to phone or text them, according to KidsOK CEO and co-founder Richard Jelbert.

"If the child doesn't pick up your call this gives you enough information to know if they are at a friend's house, in the school area or perhaps near home," he said.
