No iPod tax for Canada

The Canadian Supreme Court won't hear a case involving extra fees for iPods and other MP3 players in that country, ending a dispute over a so-called iPod tax, but rekindling debate over the legality of file swapping.

At issue was a long-standing law that allows a regulatory agency to collect a small extra fee on blank media such as CDs and tapes, with the revenues going to artists and record labels to recompense them for the private copies being made of their work.

They seem to imply in the articles that people mostly put illegally downloaded songs on their iPod.

I believe that I have the right to copy my legally bought CDs to my iPod (I don't have one) even if don't pay for a "private copy tax" as what exists for blank CDs.

I always thought that this tax on blank CDs is stupid. In all the blank CDs I bought in my life, only a few were used for music (1%, maybe less). I make backups, etc.

I think the game industry loses more than the music industry in illegally copied software. It would make more sense to have a tax on blank media to pay the game industry. You see, laws can be stupid.
