AMD releases budget dual-core Athlon

Advanced Micro Devices has released a new version of its dual-core desktop chip as the back-to-school buying season heats up.

The Athlon 64 X2 3800+ will run at 2GHz and each core will have a 512KB secondary cache for rapid data retrieval. The chip costs $354 in quantities of 1,000. That's less than existing dual-core Athlons, but the chip also doesn't provide the same performance levels as the chips released earlier. The Athlon 64 X2 4200+, for instance, has the same size cache but runs at 2.2GHz.

If the model number sounds familiar, it is. The company already sells a 3800+ Athlon with a single core.

AMD will also cut processor prices on Monday, a spokeswoman said.

$400+ at reatil is still pretty steep compaired to intel cheapest dual @ under $250
makeing the 820 still the best bang for the buck by far

i agree. wonder what the overall performance difference between them & what speed difference there is in dual core processing?

even if you sell what you go and upgrade you still a head
even if you kept you old stuff and bought new you wouldn't
nessarly break $400 for CPU+MB+MEMORY. But you should
sell the old to buy the new that way you have more captiol
plus can afford better stuff...

Take if from an AMD fanboy of what... like since the k62..
the 820 is an insanely good deal / value

IF AMD would just release a cheap dual core 64 bit sempron!!!!
it would be "bliss"

Better, why would I sell my motherboard, processor, and ram to get a dual setup that is sub-par to just replacing my processor. I would have to sell every thing at a discount. Processor $200, Motherboard $100.00 or less, Ram $175.00. $475.00 never mind shipping, and if I can find a buyer.

Prices Grabbed from Price Watch

830 318.00
MB 130.00
DDR2 2 Gig 418

Total= 866.00 w/o shipping

OR

3800 x2 $405.00 /w shipping

-$175.00 for my old processor.

$230.00 no reloads, and less work. Can overclock to 4800 speeds that will trump the Intel processor I would be replacing it with.

Get my point?
