Promoting the idea of a "darknet," free-speech advocate Ian Clarke, 28, said he's developing a new version of his Freenet file-sharing system that will make it easier to trade digital information anonymously, in a bid to combat censorship and political repression — but not to necessarily violate copyrights — according to a report by The New York Times.

Most P2P attempts to provide anonymity, do so at a cost of a wasteful number of extra hops, so the source may be the adjacent node itself, or several hops further away, where each hop uses a node's downstream and more limited upstream.

The concept is similar to giving someone a phone-box runaround to shake off a tail.

Other approaches use encrypted point to point connections, and a trust base, but are inherently vulnerable to any breach in that trust base.
