Michigan pols reheat Hot Coffee
Dems take online petition live; Governor adds voice to movement that seeks greater authority in game sales.
Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle in Michigan this week stepped up an ongoing debate concerning who should police the sale of M-rated games: retailers, as is the case now, or state authorities. Also at stake are penalties that could be imposed on retailers who violate the letter of the law--if laws were to be passed. Michigan Democrats are taking the lead in that effort, as well as tangentially related efforts to ensure that the "recall" of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is complete. The state already has a history of trying to create laws governing the sale of certain games. On February 24 of this year, state Senator Hansen Clarke introduced Senate Bill 249. The bill would bar the sale or rental of "restricted video games" (those rated AO or M by the ESRB) to anyone under the age of 18. A violation would be punishable by imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of $5,000, or both. The bill, in a slightly modified form, was passed by the Senate in May. This week's actions are somewhat more benign. __________ Read More / Source: GameSpot |

hot coffee is nothing but absurd stupidity. there are much more worse things out there in this world than a brief scene in a video game, that everybody at one point or another in their lives are going to be exposed to.

Once upon a time there was a country where freedom was a gift to everyone... well, almost everyone indeed

Look at the demo of FEAR that was issued yesterday. This is damned realistic and very violent. So tell me why a soft sex sequence is banned but gore games are ok.

people exploding = good. people naked = bad. it's america where everyone is so freaking puritan when it comes to a naked person you'd think it was biblical times. They dont mind slowmotion replays of knives being jabbed into people's necks on an episode of CSI but they'd never show a nipple even in something as cartoon and pedestrian as a video game.

walking to the grocery store today in paris i saw boobs and asses on about 5 different signs or posters. note these arent the smutty signs outside of the porn shop that show far worse, but ads for lotion in a pharmacy window or a lingerie ad on a bus stop. it would be hipocritical of them to legislate the banning of video game boobs when anyone with eyes can see them on tv or in the street or on their own chest on a daily basis.
i think the only reason europe has a game ratings system in place at all is because europeans are a bit like the US is with nudity when it comes to violence, only not as sensitive and far less litigious. They are only video games after all.

I'm not for it, plus I think it's a waste of tax payer dollars. The game has a mature rating, and that same rating system says there maybe some sexual content.

i dont understand the rental part, you have to be 18 i believe to even be able to rent from most stores, and yet young people still are able to get their hands on these games? I dont really care if they enforce the esrb rating in retail stores, as i am 19.
