Another way past Windows antipiracy found

Microsoft's efforts to fight counterfeiting have hit another snag with the posting of a new method claimed to get around a Windows piracy check.
The check is meant to prevent people with pirated copies of the operating system from downloading additional software from Microsoft. By changing a setting in a Microsoft validation tool called "GenuineCheck.exe," it's possible to generate a code that will validate the Windows software on a machine as genuine even if it is pirated, according to a Web site publicized on Thursday in a posting to the popular Full Disclosure security mailing list.

I have a legit version of XP pro just in case, but "my friend" has a not so legit version that he uses mainly cause activation is a pain over the phone. He found a keymaker and keychanger that worked to make windows genuine w/o having to do all that other stuff. Before he changed keys he got the "you are using a victim of piracy" or whatever message.

If you run the Windows Genuine Check while trying to download something from Microsoft.com, what happens if it determs your copy of Windows is not valid?

lol...nothing happens that I know of except you get a message saying basically "you are using a key that is normally for large companies, and it appears to be invalid etc etc.....then it says you are possibly a victim of software piracy please contact your dealer and such"

rolleyes

This is all pretty funny because the other day I got a call, out of the blue, from an old friend. He told me that someone installed windows xp pro on one of his computers and now he is not able to get any updates for the system. He can't even install SP2. I had to tell him that he has been using windows long enough and that it's time to go out and purchase it.
