Microsoft Summer Camp Recruits Girls for Computing, Technology Industries

Microsoft Corp. has invited 80 high school girls from across the world to its Redmond campus this week, to participate in the fifth annual DigiGirlz High Tech Camp, scheduled to run from Aug. 8 through Aug. 11.

Microsoft created DigiGirlz to educate high school girls about the careers and opportunities available to them within the technology industry, according to a recent news release.

The company hopes that the camp will encourage more young women to pursue degrees and careers in computing science and computer engineering, with the ultimate goal of narrowing the gender gap in the industry.

"One of the main purposes of the camp is to demystify what a career in technology is all about, so we can attract and recruit girls and women to the field," said Emily McKeon, a Microsoft diversity consultant and DigiGirlz program manager.

"The goal is to widen the high-tech talent pool, and in turn expand the ability to create dynamic new technologies, research and services."
