QuakeCon 2005 takes off

Dallas (TX) - The worldwide phenomenon of networked computer gaming enters its second decade this week. The grandfather of all massive LAN Party events, QuakeCon celebrates its 10th anniversary. In 1996 a set of friends from the online gaming community gathered at the La Quinta in Garland Texas. Personalities like PappyR from Planet Quake, Jonathan "Fata1ty" Wendel, and thousands of others came together today for the start of QuakeCon 2005.

Being the 10th anniversary year, the party looks to be the best in its long history. There are a lot of debuts on the docket throughout the event. Today, Nvidia released the GeForce 7800 GT graphics processor onto the market for gamers looking for solid performance but at a more digestible sticker price.

People lined the hallways and foyer of the Gaylord Texan convention center. The passion of LAN gaming and the experience known as QuakeCon drew them in as early as Wednesday morning. This kind of occurrence can only be compared to the passion of Star Wars fans sitting outside Mann's Chinese Theater for the release of Episode One. I am sure that if they were permitted, they would have even formed a line even sooner. While waiting gamers played cards, set up makeshift networks to frag each other, watched movies, talked about hardware and games, and even slept in the walkways.
