DDR1 SDRams have been in the market for so long that most hardware enthusiasts are very familiar with the popular ones and the chips that each of these use. Due to it's high latency at its debut, DDR2 has not been favoured by many enthusiasts. That, on top of the high premium one had to pay for DDR2, put off quite a few enthusiasts. However, in the past few months, the DDR2 industry has seen quite a large development with many low latency and much higher clock variants entering the market.
