Mixing it up with iPods on the digital nightlife scene
It started in 2002, when Andrew Andrew DJ -- a dynamic team made up of two men named Andrew -- let patrons at New York's APT club pick seven minutes of music off their iPods, each holding 1,000 pre-approved songs.
What started as a tech-inspired experiment known as MP3Jing has mushroomed into a worldwide phenomenon in three years: parties with names like Playlist and NoWax in London, Tokyo, Seattle, San Diego, Calgary, Detroit, Vienna, Philly and Beijing. Quirky San Franciscans -- techies, music nerds and electro artists -- do things their own way. Two events encouraging clubgoers to DJ from their own MP3 players, Indie Circus and PlugnPlay, started this spring in San Francisco, each with a distinct premise.
