Zotob Morphs into 11 Variants

After creeping through computer networks at U.S. media organizations and credit card giant Visa, the Zotob worm had mutated into at least 11 variants Wednesday as it continued to crash computers worldwide.

Security experts said they had never seen a worm or a virus morph as quickly as Zotob, which first began worming through computer networks Sunday. What’s more, security pros don’t expect any slowdown.

"We’re going to have hundreds, if not thousands, of variants to exploit this," said Ken Dunham of the iDefense section of VeriSign. "It’s like a swarm of mosquitoes that are just eating away at you. It’s not like one worm is taking the world by storm."

In one of its most brazen attacks, Zotob infected hundreds of computers at Visa International’s headquarters in California Tuesday, forcing some employees to head home as technicians scrambled to sanitize its computers.
