Lite-On LTR-52246S 52/24/52 CD-RW Drive Review

Great Review at Mikhailtech for all you members thinking of upgrading in the new year.

Quote:
Besides optical drives, LITE-ON also produces motherboards for OEM, CRT and LCD monitors and even some industrial products that are of no interest to us computer enthusiasts. But the most popular of all LITE-ON products are the optical drives, especially the CDRW drives and DVD-ROM drives. Due to low prices and very good quality, LITE-ON CDRW drives can be found in many personal computers. You could have a LITE-ON in your PC and not even know it, because there are a lot of companies that buy the drives from LITE-ON and sell them under their own brand. Among these are SONY, TDK, Memorex, Traxdata, CenDyne and many more.

But the first two are the most important because they are very well known, have a very high standard and they would not jeopardize their reputation by selling third party drives that are not top quality. I said that you might own a LITE-ON drive and not even know it because SONY and TDK sell the drives under their own brand, but they personalize it before they sell it, changing the front panel, firmware and TDK even replaces the tray. So all SONY drives faster than 24/10/40 are in fact LITE-ON drives. Same goes for TDK drives faster than 32/10/40. With such a volume of drives sold in both retail and OEM, it is no wonder LITE-ON has become the number one supplier of optical drives. Their main advantage is their close relationship with MediaTek, a Taiwanese company that produces controller chips for CDRW and DVD drives. Like most LITE-ON CDRW drives, the LTR-52246S comes in a red box.

I have this drive, and as usual Lite-On has produced an excellent piece of hardware.

why?

my question is why are they bothering with getting faster when the times are not really that much faster?

Yes, I have two as well and I agree that they're good drives. Inexpensive, fast, fairly quiet...and loves Nero. What more could you ask for?
