Apple, Freescale sign chip deal

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Apple Computer Inc. late Friday said that it signed an agreement to purchase computer chips from Freescale Semiconductor Inc. through 2008, according to a filing made late Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The contract, dated Aug. 22, calls for Freescale to fill any orders Apple places over the next three years. Austin, Texas-based Freescale makes the G4 chip that powers Apple's laptops and Mac mini desktop computers.

It remains to be seen how many orders Apple will make. Earlier this summer, the company made a big splash when it announced it would switch to computer chips produced by Intel Corp., the world's largest chip company. International Business Machines Corp. is Apple's other main computer-chip supplier for the Macintosh product line.

In the filing, Apple said it is "under no obligation to purchase Freescale microprocessors other than work in progress that was in place at the time the agreement was executed."
