WiMAX Trials Gaining, 2006 Commercial Deployment Seen

Airspan Networks, a firm in the vanguard of the WiMAX rollout, said Friday that it is conducting trials in the U.S. and Japan in addition to the U.K. trial announced earlier this week.

“PIPEX (U.K. ISP) is the first in the U.K., I believe,” said Airspan’s Peter Aronstam in response to a query. “We have other trials underway in other countries. And we have a very important trial in the U.S.” Aronstam, chief financial officer of Airspan, said some trial participants have asked not to be identified.

Scores of companies, perhaps hundreds, are racing to deploy one or another or many pieces of WiMAX, the wide area wireless solution that will be an open standard and will offer high data speeds as well as wide area reach covering miles. While companies have been working toward achieving certification, the standards and certification process has dragged on.

“We’re hoping to get our certification in early November,” said Aronstam, adding that the next milestone will likely be the conclusion of various trials underway in different countries. He expects the first commercial deployment of WiMAX could be rolled out in Japan.
