Apple prepping video-capable iPod for early September launch?
Chicago (IL) - Apple appears to be in the midst of revamping key players of its iPod family with last week's news indicating a switch from harddrive to Flash memory for the iPod mini and new developments that hint to the introduction of a video-capable iPod in the second week of September.
A video-enabled iPod was believed to be in development for quite some time, but a secretive invitation to a "special event" hosted by the company as well as news bits arriving from Taiwan spark new fire to rumors that Apple will introduce such a device next month. This "special event" is scheduled for September 7 and is planned to be held in San Francisco. The style of the invitation is reminiscent of the message we received just about four years ago, at a time when CEO Steve Jobs introduced the original "breakthrough" iPod. As in October 2001 and pretty much every other major announcement, Apple is tight-lipped on what we may expect from this event, but sources from Taiwan told Tom's Hardware Guide that Apple may be ready to introduce a portable video player. Details about this new iPod are scarce but according to our sources, the device will be introduced as fifth iPod family (next to the iPod, the U2 iPod, iPod mini and iPod Shuffle), sport a different but simplistic white design and will be capable of playing audio and video, the latter at least in MPEG2 and MOV file formats. Other specs may include a 640x480 pixel color screen with a size of at least 3 inches as well as a 1.8-inch harddrive which will come in sizes of up to 80 GByte. __________ Read More / Source: Tom's Hardware Guide |
