ATI R580 taped out

The R520 chip is delayed for a whole quarter now and this has given ATI enough time to prepare for its next step, the R580 chip. The R580 is done by a separate team from the one making R520, with both teams working independently.

It's funny enough that R580 chip was taped out a few weeks back and that this time ATI got it right with its first tape out. It is working fine but we are not sure about the yields. If it makes ATI happy, that means that it got much better numbers than with R520.

This chip may be ready sooner than anyone expects but ATI will follow its path and launch the R520 first, and after that will go for R580, not before Nvidia announces its G70 Ultra.

Amazing news if true, this would properly mean that ATI has a card ready if G70 Ultra were to be released. But it's only amazing news if r520 performs well, since r580 proberly isn't a large update from r520.

Don't know how the R520 will do considering they don't even know if it'll beat the 7800GTX. Guess it'll be a price war.

The rumor has been the r520 dusts the GTX but thats yet to be seen.
But ATI been grated extra time alot of spit and polish could have been added.
especally to the chips, firmware, and the motherboards that will support crossfire.

Really? Last I heard, ATI was claiming that they were "not sure that the R520 could beat/be faster than the Nvidia alternative (7800GTX?)"
But if it really does, I can't wait to switch over to PCI-E.. Crossfire.. mmm.

Well a big part of the delay is due to low yelds at the first and second tape out, not sure how many tweaks are done betweens these taps
