Call me a luddite, but I've always preferred a direct metal to metal contact between baseplate and fins.

This review seems to prove the worth of entirely heatpipe connected coolers. One advantage being that the fin assembly may be optimally sized and placed, as the direct arrangement is generally unsuitable for anything larger than an 80mm fan and fin assembly.
