Nero 7 to Be Released in the Second Week of October
After Nero Reloaded, the Germans behind the best application for burning CDs and DVDs will come in the second week of October with a new version, 7.0, which will not be a simple update, the new application allowing users to burn HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs.
The Nero 7 suite will consist of 18 applications, among which Nero Vision 4 (used to make video DVDs), Media Home, Nero Sound Trax, Nero Wave Editor (audio editor with 7.1 support), Nero Sound Box, BackitUp, InCD (compatible with the Blu-Ray UDF 2.5 and 2.6) and NeroScout (a tool which allows the creation of databases with song titles). All these features will be available from Nero Start Smart. The Nero team has also announced during IFA 2005 that certain Nero 7 functions will be integrated with the Windows operating system, which means that probably you will be able burn a CD or a DVD directly from Windows Explorer. Another novelty is the update module, which will help you to update the program without having to download the entire pack, as it happens now. Nero 7 will also integrate a new video codec, with improved capabilities and a higher compression rate. Nero 7 will cost approximately 70 Euros and once the commercial version will be launched, the company will also release a demo. For NeroLinux, there is no official release date. _______________ Source: Softpedia |

I wonder what the upgrade terms will be - if they can make it LOOK major enough, they may justify it not being a free upgrade to 6.x owners.
Mind you, there are few good reasons to "upgrade" a working CD/DVD writing program, especially given Nero's chequered history of "break it then fix it". The version 6.x major releases (6.0, 6.3, 6.6) were far from "ready" at the time they were released. Version 5.5 also suffered a significant degree of "break and fix", with the last minor point release at each step usually being the most solid. |

No definite price yet, but can't see it being much more than V6 Looks like anything less than V6 retail will be blanked from upgrade deals, taking the current upgrade offer for V5/V6 including bundle/OEM - may be worth taking, if that entitles you to a "qualifying period" upgrade to V7 at no extra charge. |

About time. But franklly, with apps like Blindwrite and Alcohol around, I don't really care much for this impending release. The nero image drive is still useful, but personally I feel the only improvements Nero's been getting lately are focused largely on the GUI and user-friendly part of it rather than the functionallity part of it, almost like the new version of Windows that is comin out and the new versions of the Mac OS and the like. I'm not really too excited, sorry.

Be nice if Image Drive worked for more than ISO and NRG files, though. |
