If you're going to do that, I recommend trying a distribution that has a "Live CD" or "Live DVD". That way you can be sure your HW is compatible without formatting / installing directly to the HD, and you can check out Linux, too.

For example, Ubuntu Linux (Distrowatch currently says it's the hot distro) has a combined installer / Live DVD version. Suse also has a Live DVD version (not combined).

so you're saying that i can put in a CD or DVD and it will go through my machine and tell me if it's Linux compatible even before i go to install it?

Yep, with a Live DVD or Live CD, you boot off the CD and it will run Linux, including the desktop, without having to install it. This way you can make sure that the distribution of Linux has all the appropriate drivers before you install to the HD.

You can even run apps from the desktop and use Linux, directly from the DVD. I'll be honest, I've only tried Knoppix to this point from a Live DVD standpoint. It works great, and even running from DVD it's pretty snappy (Knoppix was designed to be a Live DVD ONLY from the start, but it's been since modified).

A lot of people take a Live distribution with them to stores to make sure that the PC they want is compatible with the distribution they want to use.

I'd go to DistroWatch http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major to get a look at the major distributions. You can find the major distributions, their websites (and from there the d/l links), etc. Like I said, Knoppix, Ubuntu and Suse all have LiveDVD / CD distributions.

started the DVD *.ISO d/l. It's not 4.3Gb d/l like it says it is, It's saying that it's a 184Mb d/l. Dunno what's up. Hopefully after the "small" d/l, it will start the larger d/l.

Which distro are you getting? I seem to recall one of them having that issue with the servers having incorrect numbers. I ended up having to use BitTorrent to get the Ubuntu d/l ... can't recall what I did for Suse.

Well, that's the "home site". If you only got 184 MB, I know it won't work, though. I know I had to search for a mirror that had the correct image.

Maybe you have some sorta BitTorrent setup issue, maybe you need to forward the ports from your router?. I can see getting that type of d/l for some things, but I was getting like 60 - 100K when I d/led Ubuntu.

Make sure you forward the ports if you're using a router. It will make a diff.

What type of router do you have? You have to access the router through the web interface and go in and indicate what ports to forward to what PC. For example, on my Linksys WRT54GS, I go to 192.168.1.1, type in the PW, and then go to the Applications and Gaming tab. I then type in the appropriate port range (for ABC ... Another BitTorrent Client I have it set to use 40000 - 40007) and the approp. IP address for the PC. I use static IP addresses for my network for that reason, BTW.
