Large Public Trial Of WiMAX Gets Underway In Italy

In one of the largest public trials of WiMAX, Italy’s Marconi Corp. and its U.S. partner, Airspan Networks Inc. are rolling out tests of the wireless technology in three regions of Italy.

Airspan’s chief financial officer Peter Aronstan said Tuesday that each trial will cover a 10-mile radius. He noted that each of the trials will involve a relative handful of users, but enough for the trials to determine WiMAX efficacy.

Marconi, which said it believes the trial is the widest public test of WiMAX, is similar to other international telecommunications firms racing to test and deploy the wide area wireless broadband technology.

The trials will be carried out in Italy’s Piedmont and Sicilian areas, Marconi said, noting that the trials were approved by the Italian Ministry of Communication, the Italian Ministry of Defence and the Ugo Bordoni Foundation, which is coordinating the trials.
