Canon's Console software enables remote control of camcorders

New York (NY) - Aspiring movie makers can add another software tool to add to their growing collection. At the Canon Expo 2005 in New York, Canon introduced its new Console software that can remotely control a camcorder from most computers. Key functions like zoom, focusing and exposure can be changed and video can be recorded directly to hard-drives.

Camera operators will be able to see waveform and vector scopes on their laptop or computer screens. The brightness and color information is shown more accurately on scopes than by visually estimating with the human eye. Camcorder settings such as gamma, white balance and focus can be changed on the fly, allowing operators to get the shot right, the first time. Commands are sent to the camcorder via Firewire cable.

Operators will also be able to record straight to hard-drive with the new software. Both standard and high-definition recording is supported and recorded clips can be previewed right away. Canon promises a split screen mode that will allow users to review recorded clips, while previewing the next shot. Direct to Disk recording can save time that would otherwise be wasted in tape transfers.
