Web site caters to young who battle in online games

Chip Kellam runs an Ohio company that oversees violent disputes that end in death and mayhem for the losers.

Kellam's company, GameBattles Inc., is a warlord of sorts for the legions of people, mostly console-gripping young men, who fight each other online. Its Web site, www.gamebattles.com, hosts leagues, ladders and tournaments for players of Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox and PC games such as Killzone, Counter-Strike and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2.

"Some people like to check stats, talk in the forums or make new teams," says Kellam, 28. "All the challenging is done on our Web site, and you report the outcome through the Web site."

Who does GameBattles attract? You guessed it: 95% of its members are male, with 60% ages 18 to 34 and 30% younger than that. Forty% of its members, Kellam says, spend at least 20 hours a week on video games.

The busiest times? The prime homework hours of 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
