Multiboxing EverQuest: One Player, Many Characters

EverQuest is intended to be played with other players online, but occasionally, that's just not in the cards. There are times when I want to play on my own. Perhaps I've had a bad day and want to spare my friends or strangers my ill mood. Or I want to get all of my characters' experience, rather than just playing one at a time.

To play effectively, you need a full group of players. Since you can only play one character at a time per account, you need multiple accounts to multibox. Multiboxing, as it's called, is a common skill in EverQuest because so many classes have been dumbed down or totally simplified that people can do two jobs at once. Either that or they are sharp enough to run two characters at once. As an enchanter, I have very little to do most of the time, so I can devote a little attention to a second character.

Psycho that I am, I happen to have six accounts. I'm hardly alone in this; I would say half of my friends in the game have multiple accounts. The average number appears to be three.

Two-boxing is one thing. But six-boxing? Even my friends at Sony find this hilarious. While talking about this at IDF, ExtremeTech's fearless leader Loyd Case asked me to write a column about my crazy gameplay style. So here goes.

This isnt limited to just EQ, people did this in FFXI and in Dark age of camelot when i played. Not really a big deal
