Record labels tout program to disable swapping

The music and movie industries are giving people who have swapped songs and other copyrighted material over the Internet a new way to repent for their illicit ways.

A free program released Thursday, called Digital File Check, will uninstall or disable file-sharing programs on people's computers. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), a London-based affiliate of the Recording Industry Association of America, helped develop the software with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

The groups are mainly aiming the program at parents and employers in Europe.

"Digital File Check is easy to use and can help people prevent their employees, children and others from illegally downloading and swapping movies," Dan Glickman, the president of the MPAA, said in a statement.

Well, I can see an IT department downloading this to all the PCs in the network and having it run itself ... simple matter for many IT departments, really.

ya.... really gonna install this one. if i wanted to stop downloading music id just stop usieng bittorrent.

Like I said, I think it's a simple matter for an IT department to run this on all their PCs on their network ... I remember when they installed a version of a beta test "internal" program on our PCs without telling us. Besides the fact that Ad-Aware seemed to think it was spyware

they didn't tell us about it, just downloaded it and installed it, so programmers were going around wondering what the new process on their systems was ... and promptly killing it and going into the registry and removing it (thinking it was a trojan).
