Top EU privacy body criticizes data storage plan

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission's plan to store details of e-mails and telephone calls to combat terrorism does not respect the fundamental right to privacy, the EU's top adviser on data protection said on Thursday.

The Commission has proposed that telecoms firms must store details of all telephone calls in the EU for a year, and store details of Internet server use for six months to help the police tackle serious crime.

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) said it was not convinced the proposal made by the Brussels executive on Wednesday was necessary.
