PSP Firmware 2.0 Exploit Discovered

With the release of the PSP’s 2.0 firmware many PSP owners eagerly awaited a hack that would allow them to play homebrew on 2.0 PSP’s, or at least a way to downgrade their firmware to a homebrew-friendly 1.5 or 1.0. Those hopes were dashed over a week ago when the potential firmware downgrader project was cancelled; however, this week there has been a major development in a new direction.

Hackers have discovered a buffer overflow flaw that, when exploited properly, allows homebrew code to run on 2.0 firmware. A Hello World program has already been created and run successfully using the exploit. Programs that were functioning on the 1.5 and 1.0 firmware will have to be rewritten to use the exploit, so it may take a while before 2.0 homebrew reaches the level of the 1.0 or 1.5 programs. In any case, it now appears to be only a matter of time until 2.0 users have homebrew programs like their 1.0 and 1.5 counterparts. This is just in the proof of concept stages right now. They are close but not close enough to run homebrew anything.

There close but nothing is running as of today.
